MPTC Tour of Luzon 2025 Pedals Off with a Grand Opening Ceremony in Ilocos Norte

April 23, 2025 – Paoay, Ilocos Norte — The long-awaited return of one of the Philippines’ most iconic cycling events is finally here. The MPTC Tour of Luzon 2025 officially kicked off with a grand opening ceremony held in the historic town of Paoay, Ilocos Norte—setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling week of athleticism, community spirit, and national pride. Against the timeless backdrop of the UNESCO-listed Paoay Church, the event celebrated not just the beginning of a race, but the revival of a legacy.

The opening ceremony began on a high note, with a warm welcome from Paoay Mayor Shiela Gallano, who expressed her pride in hosting the event and her excitement for the economic and cultural benefits it could bring to the province. “This is more than just a race,” she shared. “It’s an opportunity for us to showcase the beauty, culture, and hospitality of Ilocos Norte.”

Following her remarks, Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc delivered an inspiring message, focusing on the Tour’s potential to strengthen regional tourism and elevate local pride. “Events like the Tour of Luzon serve as powerful reminders of what our regions have to offer—not just in terms of landscape, but in the spirit of the people who live here,” he said.

A key moment in the program came with an address from Mr. Arrey Perez, Chief Regulatory Officer of MPTC and Executive Director of the Tour of Luzon. Perez underscored the importance of strategic partnerships in mounting a large-scale sporting event of this caliber. “The Tour of Luzon is not just a cycling race. It’s a national movement powered by collaboration, shared passion, and the dream of building something meaningful for Philippine sports,” he said.

Adding to the ceremonial excitement was the formal presentation of the 17 participating teams by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Bambol Tolentino. Representing a mix of seasoned national athletes and promising new talent, these teams embody the competitive spirit and camaraderie that the Tour seeks to promote. Their participation underscores the growing enthusiasm around cycling as both a sport and a lifestyle in the Philippines.

In a heartfelt tribute, Mr. Patrick Gregorio, Chairman of Duckworld Ph, led a moment of remembrance for the late Alberto Lina—a respected businessman, cycling advocate, and former Tour of Luzon race organizer. Known for his lifelong dedication to Philippine sports and community development, Lina’s legacy continues to inspire the new generation of race leaders and athletes. Gregorio’s tribute served as a reminder of the Tour’s roots and the values it was built upon.

The ceremony concluded with remarks from MPTC President Jose Lim, who thanked everyone involved in bringing the event to life—from the local government units and national sports bodies, to the athletes, sponsors, and the fans cheering along the route. “This Tour is more than just a race,” Lim said. “It’s a celebration of Filipino resilience, determination, and unity through sport. As we travel through Luzon’s diverse communities, we’re not just pushing pedals—we’re carrying with us stories, dreams, and the unwavering Filipino spirit.”

From April 24 to May 1, 2025, the MPTC Tour of Luzon will take cyclists on an intense journey across Northern and Central Luzon, challenging both endurance and strategy. More than a test of physical limits, this Tour represents a broader national goal: to revive cycling’s cultural and competitive presence in the country, and to inspire new generations of athletes.

As the wheels start spinning and the peloton moves forward, the MPTC Tour of Luzon 2025 invites everyone to join the ride—whether from the roadside, online, or in spirit—as it writes the next chapter in Philippine cycling history.
