“Hoy, Pinoy ako, buo aking loob, may agimat ang dugo ko” a stirring line from the Filipino anthem Noypi perfectly echoed the grit and pride on display as Go for Gold Philippines surged to a commanding performance in Stage 3 of the MPTC Tour of Luzon 2026.
Emmanuel Dave Montemayor delivered a stunning stage victory, clocking in at 03:23:09, leading a powerful statement ride that saw Filipino cyclists reclaim the
spotlight.
Go for Gold didn’t just take the top step; they dominated the podium’s summit with Marc Ryan Lago securing second place, underlining a resurgent Filipino presence in this year’s tour.
From the opening stretch under a punishing 36-degree heat index, the race ignited with intensity as riders blasted out of New Clark City at speeds reaching 43 km/h, with ten cyclists quickly breaking away from the pack in a bold early move.
The first sprint point saw an all-Filipino showcase that electrified spectators, with Mervin Corpuz of 7-Eleven Cliqq Roadbike Philippines leading the charge, followed closely by Montemayor, Ronnilan Quita of 7-Eleven Cliqq Roadbike Philippines, Sumiso Basalan Excellent Noodles, and Lago.
It was the kind of formation fans had been waiting for since Stage 1, as local riders asserted themselves and pushed back against the foreign contenders, including the young yellow jersey holder Yousef Ibrahim Alrefai, who struggled to respond to the relentless pace.
As the race progressed, nine riders maintained a daring breakaway, keeping the pressure high and the competition fierce. Basalan, Lago, and Corpuz continued to trade blows in the intermediate sprint, keeping the Filipino momentum alive. Behind them, the peloton worked hard to close the gap, even managing to reel in the yellow jersey group, but the breakaway proved too strong and too coordinated.
By midday, the decisive move had been made. The nine-man breakaway held firm all the way to the finish, setting the stage for Go for Gold’s tactical brilliance. Montemayor and Lago executed flawlessly in the closing stretch, sealing a one-two finish and claiming Stage 3 in emphatic fashion, with Basalan rounding out the podium in third.
The latest jersey standings reflect a shifting dynamic in the tour. Nikita Shulchenko of LCW retains the overall lead, while Montemayor’s victory earns him the stage classification and strengthens his hold on the sprint points jersey. Alrefai continues to dominate the mountains and youth classifications, while Corpuz’s aggressive riding earns him the most combative honors. Go for Gold Philippines now stands firmly atop the team general classification, signaling their intent as the race intensifies.
Present during the awarding ceremony were Mayor Hon. Viandrei Nicole J. Cuevas, City Administrator Olga Rose M. Berdon, and NLEX Corp President Luis Reñon, all of whom showed strong support for the event, underscoring the local government and private sector’s shared commitment to promoting Philippine cycling and celebrating the achievements of Filipino athletes on the national stage.
Looking ahead, Stage 4 promises a grueling test with multiple mountain climbs from Palayan City to Bayombong and three KOM segments with Cat 4, Cat 3, Cat 1 category on the horizon, the battle is far from over.
While some of the expected frontrunners and past champions have remained relatively quiet, questions linger, are they conserving energy for a decisive strike, or is this the rise of a new order led by a determined Filipino charge?
